Scalpel was formed in 2001 as a school band, in that year we won the Rockquest for the Hawke’s Bay area, and also won an independent battle of the bands in Hastings.
Unfortunately or bassist left school the next year so we were unable to participate in the Rockquest. Our bassist and drummer left at the end of 2002. So we had to start fresh this year with a new line up and a heavier sound.

The current line-up consists of Marlon on Guitar, Phil on drums, Cody on Bass and myself on Throat. The best way perhaps to describe our sound is to compare it to say The Addams Family meets The Simpsons, we have a dark macbre sound but also a happy loopy sound in our songs.
The best way to disclose our influences is to give a brief bio on each member:
Cody: Bass guitar, Age 19, played bass for 1 year, influences are:Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Six Feet Under, ACDC
Phil: Drums, Age 23, played drums for 2 years, influences are: Slayer, Pantera, Metallica, Morbid Angel.
Marlon: Guitar, Age 18, played guitar for 5 years, influences are: Slipknot, Metallica, Metallica(again), Classical music, Old School music, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai.
Adam: Vocals, Age 19, played for 3 years, influences are:Deicide , Pantera, Morbid Angel,
Cannibal Corpse , ACDC, Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson.

With the addition of our new members we continued to progress and get a following from the local scene as have now become a much more technical band then before, with more catchy songs that have more thought put into them.
Our performance is not to be taken lightly with a stage show occurring at any random time, we do not dress up for amusement, we dress up because it’s the way we feel when we play (sic).
So far this year we have played gigs at local bars and also played at 5 21st parties and also a memorial party.
We play this kind of music as not only is it a way to let out our aggression but it is also the only kind of music our heart could ever truly be in.
Our aims for the year are to get somewhere in the battle of the bands and to record a mini album.
